About IVF

What is In-vitro Fertilisation?

In-vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is a fertility treatment which helps thousands of people every year. IVF involves combining Eggs and Sperm in a laboratory to create an Embryo. This Embryo is then transferred back to the womb to continue pregnancy. Thanks to IVF, more people then ever before are able to achieve a healthy pregnancy.

About IVF

The IVF Process

First Appointment

Arrange a first appointment with one of our expert fertility consultants. First appointments are free of charge and available without delay.

Agree a Treatment Plan

Your consultant will help you find the best treatment based on your unique results and circumstances. Once you’ve agreed a treatment plan you can move directly into treatment.

Stimulation and Monitoring

Our nurses will help you to understand how to take “stimulation” medication, which helps your body produce more mature eggs in a single cycle.

Egg Collection

Once the eggs reach the optimal level of maturity our team will help you arrange your egg collection. This non-surgical procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes, and you’re able to return home afterwards.

Fertilisation and Embryo Development

Our expert laboratory team will combine your eggs with sperm to create embryos. These embryos are then developed until they reach the Blastocyst stage, with their progress being monitored at every step.

Embryo Transfer

Your consultant will help to decide on the highest quality embryo to use for transfer. Any additional embryos can then be frozen for use at a later date.

Pregnancy Test

Two weeks after your treatment you will be invited to conduct a pregnancy test, which will indicate the outcome of your treatment. Whatever the result, our team are by your side to help you with the next steps.

Frequently asked questions about IVF

How long is the waiting list for IVF at Maigaard fertility clinic?

We believe everyone should have the opportunity to access the treatment they need without waiting lists or delay. For that reason we have created a team which is large enough to ensure you can start treatment whenever you’re ready, without delay.

How long does IVF take?

Like other fertility treatments, the menstrual cycle determines when IVF treatment can begin. This means you can usually start treatment within 3 weeks or contacting the clinic. Once you start treatment, IVF usually takes between 6 and 10 weeks from first appointment to embryo transfer, depending on your individual circumstances.

How much does IVF cost?

At Maigaard we believe that treatment costs should be kept affordable to ensure everyone has the opportunity to access the treatment they need. With this in mind we have created a transparent pricing structure which includes everything required for successful treatment without hidden costs. Visit our pricing page to learn more about the costs of IVF and our transparent pricing structure.

What are the risks of IVF?

IVF is a well established fertility treatment which has a very low risk of harmful side-effects. However, there are some risks associated with any medical procedure which you should be aware of prior to starting treatment. For example, ovarian stimulation carries a small risk of OHSS. Your consultant will work with you to explain the risks involved in treatment prior to starting IVF.

Is IVF painful?

No, IVF is not a painful medical procedure but there may be some aspects of treatment which cause mild discomfort. For example, ovarian stimulation can cause discomfort similar to bloating or constipation, while the egg collection procedure can also cause mild to moderate discomfort. None of these symptoms should persist and your consultant will help you to understand how to best manage these factors prior to starting treatment.

When should I consider IVF?

If you’ve been trying to conceive naturally for more than 6 months, or have a history of infertility, you should consider speaking with one of our experts who will help you to understand if fertility treatment such as IVF is right for you. Similarly, if you have had one or more unsuccessful IUI procedures you may want to consider IVF and the logical next step.
