About IUI
What is Intra Uterine Insemination?
Intra Uterine Insemination (IUI), sometimes called Artificial Insemination, is a fertility treatment which can help overcome some types of infertility, or help those without a fertility issue conceive with donated sperm. IUI using partners sperm is known as IUI-H (intra uterine insemination – heterologous) while IUI with donated sperm is known as IUI-D (donor).
Unlike other fertility treatments like IVF or ICSI, IUI fertilisation occurs within the body rather than in the laboratory. This makes IUI a less expensive “first line treatment’ which is considered less invasive than other fertility treatments.
However, IUI has a success rate which is lower than would be expected from IVF treatment; around 14-20% depending on the age of the woman.

The IUI Process
First Appointment
Arrange a first appointment with one of our expert fertility consultants. First appointments are free of charge and available without delay.
Agree a Treatment Plan
Your consultant will help you find the best treatment based on your unique results and circumstances. Once you’ve agreed a treatment plan you can move directly into treatment.
Stimulation and Monitoring
IUI usually required controlled ovarian stimulation which ensures the correct number of mature follicles or “eggs” are present and that the IUI is performed at the correct time for optimal chances of success.
Sperm collection and preparation
Before the planned insemination partner sperm or donated sperm is prepared in our laboratory to separate the most motile sperm from the rest of the sample. This process creates a more concentrated sample to help ensure the best chances of success.
Intra Uterine Insemination
Using a small tube, the sperm sample is placed directly into the uterus where it can combine with the eggs to create an embryo.
Pregnancy Test
Two weeks after your treatment you will be invited to conduct a pregnancy test, which will indicate the outcome of your treatment. Whatever the result, our team are by your side to help you with the next steps.

Frequently asked questions about IUI
How long does IUI take?
Like most fertility treatments, IUI is dependant on ensuring that treatments occurs at the correct point during the menstrual cycle. However, there is no waiting list for treatment at Maigaard and you can arrange a free appointment straight away.
Is IUI the right treatment for me?
The best person to help you understand if IUI is the right treatment type for you is your consultant. Depending on your age, test results, fertility history and other factors, your consultant will help you to compare the likelihood of success using IUI as opposed to other fertility treatments.
Is IUI better than IVF?
IUI and IVF are two different medical procedures which are suitable for different patients, depending on test results, age, fertility history and other factors. You should therefore not think about one type of treatment being better or worse than others; the most important thing is to find the treatment type which is most suitable for you.
Where can I find donor sperm for IUI-D?
Our donation coordinators will help you to understand your options regarding finding donated sperm. In order to ensure our patients have access to donated sperm without complications, we have created Maigaard Sperm Bank. By using the Maigaard Sperm Bank you can access high quality sperm with the added assurance that every donor has been screen by our own medical team.
Is IUI painful?
No, IUI is not painful. Some people may feel some mild discomfort during the insemination itself, but this is unusual. If you’re concerned about pain during IUI, speak with our team who will help you to understand what to expect.
How many cycles of IUI can I have?
There is no limit on the number of cycles of IUI you can have. However, if you’ve had more than one unsuccessful IUI treatment your consultant may help you to consider other options, including IVF or ICSI, which may have a higher likelihood of success.
