The TESE procedure

TESE (TEsticular Sperm Extraction) is a surgical sperm retrieval procedure indicated for men who have no sperm in their ejaculate. It allows us to retrieve sperm directly from the seminiferous tubules (that are located inside the testes).

TESE involves making a small incision in the testes and examining the tubules for the presence of sperm.

The procedure:

The testicular biopsy is almost painless and normally takes approximately half an hour. It is done with local anesthesia around the sperm cord and in the scrotum. Approximately 10 minutes after the local anesthesia is given, the sample is retrieved from the testicle using a thin needle, in a procedure takes only a few seconds. Most men only experience slight discomfort afterwards. The retrieved material is analyzed at the clinic laboratory for the presence of sperm cells.

As the number of spermatozoa obtained is always low, TESE needs to be combined with ICSI.

After the procedure:

Men might feel a slight pain in testicle and the scrotum a few days after the procedure. We recommend moderate rest during the next one or two days. Men are able to work, just being advised refrain from strenuous physical work.

Patients experiencing strong pain, swelling, redness or fever should contact Maigaard Fertility Clinic. This situation is very rare, but can happen.

Patients are able to drive from the clinic after the procedure.​
