What is a due date?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Technically, the estimated due date (EDD), often simply called the due date, is the date a pregnancy is expected to reach 40 weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP), or around 266 days from conception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it is crucial to remember that this date does not guarantee when labour will begin. Most babies are born within a wider timeframe around their due date, and this is completely normal. In many pregnancies, \u201cfull term\u201d is considered anywhere between 37 and 42 weeks. Thus, a baby may arrive a little earlier or later than expected while still developing normally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to calculate the due date?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A due date can be calculated in several ways, depending on what information is available. Some people know the exact date of ovulation or conception, while others rely on their menstrual cycle dates or fertility treatment timeline. Early ultrasound scans can also help estimate gestational age, particularly when cycle dates are uncertain or unknown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Calculating the due date from your last menstrual period (Naegele\u2019s Rule)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The most common method is based on Naegele\u2019s Rule, named after the German obstetrician and professor Franz Karl Naegele. Introduced in the early 19th century, this formula remains the standard method for estimating due date and is still widely used by both healthcare professionals and online pregnancy calculators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naegele\u2019s Rule is based on a typical 28-day menstrual cycle, with ovulation occurring around day 14. It also assumes an average pregnancy length of 40 weeks, or 280 days, counted from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To calculate the due date with Naegele\u2019s Rule:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Add 7 days to the first day of the last menstrual period.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Subtract 3 months.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Add 1 year.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    For example, if the first day of the last menstrual period was February 7, 2026, the estimated due date will be November 14, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This method works better for individuals with a relatively regular cycle. However, even in their case, the calculated date is only a prediction, and the real due date may differ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2. Estimating due date with a pregnancy wheel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Healthcare professionals often use a physical or digital pregnancy wheel to calculate gestational age and due dates quickly. The wheel serves as a visual tool translating the LMP-based dating system into a simple and practical calendar format. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The wheel starts on the first day of the last menstrual period. From that point, it easily calculates an estimated due date at 40 weeks, while tracking current gestational age week by week. In practice, this gives healthcare professionals and patients a quick overview of how far along the pregnancy is, the developmental stage, and which check-ups or scans are typically expected at that time. Many online due date calculators work in the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Since this method is based on Naegele\u2019s Rule, it is also more suitable for individuals with regular cycles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    3. Calculating due date based on conception<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    A conception-based calculation is generally more precise than the method using the last menstrual period, since ovulation does not always occur exactly on day 14, even in people with regular cycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    However, to use this method, you need a conception date, which usually corresponds closely to the time of ovulation. This date is most precisely known in fertility treatment, where the timing of egg retrieval and embryo transfer is recorded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In the case of natural conception, the timing could be estimated for individuals who tracked their ovulation. Otherwise, the last menstrual period and early ultrasound are typically used to establish the pregnancy timeline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    With this method, healthcare professionals typically estimate the due date by adding 38 weeks (266 days) from conception, excluding the approximate period of two weeks before ovulation from the calculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    4. Estimating the due date with ultrasound scans<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    An ultrasound scan is considered the most accurate way to confirm gestational age, and it is especially helpful for people with irregular cycles or uncertain menstrual dates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    At Maigaard fertility clinics in Aarhus and Odense, we usually confirm the pregnancy timeline between weeks 7 and 10 of pregnancy. During the scan, a specialist measures the baby\u2019s crown\u2013rump length (CRL), or the distance from the top of the head to the bottom of the body. This measurement is highly reliable at this stage because embryos tend to grow at a very consistent rate in early pregnancy. In some cases, however, the scan may show a slightly different timeline than the initial due date calculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A due date confirmation scan is typically performed in the first trimester as part of a nuchal translucency (NT) scan, which takes place between weeks 11 and 14 of pregnancy. The primary goal of this examination is to screen for certain chromosomal conditions, such as Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome and Patau syndrome, by measuring the fluid-filled space at the back of the baby\u2019s neck. Our specialists also use this examination as an opportunity to measure CRL and make a final confirmation of the due date. This scan is performed at the public hospital or clinic where you receive your maternity care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Due date calculation in IVF<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    In the case of in vitro fertilisation (IVF)<\/a>, the due date is calculated from the known timing of treatment, such as egg retrieval or embryo transfer. These dates are precisely recorded and can be used for a more accurate estimation of gestational age from the very beginning of the pregnancy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    At Maigaard, we consider the egg retrieval date as day 0. Fertilisation is then estimated as the following day, and from there we add 266 days to calculate the due date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For instance, if egg retrieval takes place on 10 April 2026, fertilisation is estimated on 11 April 2026, and the expected due date would be 13 January 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If the due date is calculated from the moment of embryo transfer, the calculation should be adjusted depending on the embryo’s age. Thus, to estimate the due date for a day-3 embryo, 263 days are added to the transfer day, while for a day-5 embryo, 261 days are added. It also means that when two patients have embryo transfer on the same calendar day, their due dates may differ depending on the stage of the embryo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Due dates with twins or multiple pregnancies<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Due dates in twin and multiple pregnancies are often approached slightly differently, as these pregnancies are more likely to result in earlier delivery. In such a scenario, healthcare professionals may plan for birth before the standard 40-week point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This does not mean that the original due date itself changes compared with a singleton pregnancy. Usually, it reflects that the expected timing of delivery may be earlier, while the pregnancy timeline itself remains the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Medical conditions that may require delivery before the due date<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    In some cases, medical specialists may recommend planning a birth earlier than the original due date. This is often done in cases of pregnancy-related conditions associated with an increased risk of premature birth, or where an earlier delivery may be recommended to ensure the safety of both mother and baby. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
