About ICSI

What is Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection?

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a fertility treatment similar to IVF which can be particularly helpful in situations where sperm quality or count is poor. ICSI involves carefully selecting the best quality sperm cell and injecting it directly into the egg under high microscopic magnification. ICSI can help provide positive outcomes where traditional IVF may not be successful.

About ICSI

The ICSI Process

First Appointment

Arrange a first appointment with one of our expert fertility consultants. First appointments are free of charge and available without delay both online and in-person.

Agree a Treatment Plan

Your consultant will help you find the best treatment based on your unique results and circumstances. Once you’ve agreed a treatment plan you can move directly into treatment.

Stimulation and Monitoring

Our nurses will help you to understand how to take “stimulation” medication, which helps your body produce more mature eggs in a single cycle.

Egg Collection

Once the eggs reach the optimal level of maturity our team will help you arrange your egg collection. This non-surgical procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes, and you’re able to return home afterwards.

ICSI Fertilisation and Embryo Development

Our expert laboratory team will use highly specialised magnification equipment to select a single, high-quality sperm which will be injected directly to the centre of the egg cells to create embryos. These embryos are then developed until they reach the Blastocyst stage, with their progress being monitored at every step.

Embryo Transfer

Your consultant will help to decide on the highest quality embryo to use for transfer. Any additional embryos can then be frozen for use at a later date.

Pregnancy Test

Two weeks after your treatment you will be invited to conduct a pregnancy test, which will indicate the outcome of your treatment. Whatever the result, our team are by your side to help you with the next steps.

Frequently asked questions about ICSI

Is ICSI better than IVF?

Different treatment types are suitable for different circumstances. At Maigaard, your consultant will carefully review your unique test results and medical history to suggest a treatment type which is most likely to provide a successful outcome.

Is ICSI painful?

No, like IVF, the ICSI process should not cause any significant pain or discomfort. Our team of nurses and doctors are experts at ensuring all patients are cared for throughout the treatment process.

Are there choromosomal risks with ICSI?

The ICSI technique has been performed for more than 30 years, allowing for the birth millions of children worldwide. Careful examination of these children’s health has not shown any increased incidence of chromosome abnormalities or malformations.
The preparation for an ICSI treatment is identical to the classical IVF one, except for the fertilization procedure that happens in the laboratory.

Is ICSI only useful in case of "male-factor" infertility?

ICSI can be helpful in a variety of cases, particularly those where conventional IVF has been unsuccessful or fertilisation has not occurred. Not all of these cases are related to male factor infertility.

Can you use ICSI with frozen eggs?

Yes, ICSI can be used to fertilise eggs which have previously been frozen.
