Fertility Preservation Egg Freezing

About Egg Freezing
Who should consider Egg Freezing?
Fertility is closely linked to age. As you get older, your ovarian reserve diminishes, as does the quality of those eggs. If you think you may want to start a family when you are older, it may be worth considering freezing eggs now to maximise your chances of conceiving successful later in life.
Egg Freezing (also known as fertility preservation) is an increasingly popular way to provide more options if and when you decide to start a family. With more people wanting to focus on their education, career or other responsibilities before starting a family, Egg Freezing is a sensible way to provide peace of mind.

About Egg Freezing
How does Egg Freezing Work?
Egg Freezing involves collecting and freezing eggs at a time in your life when egg quantity and quality is high, so you have the option to use those eggs at a time when your fertility is lower. Fertility is closely linked to maternal age and fertility preservation can help overcome the challenges which are sometimes encountered by those trying to conceive later in life.
The Egg Freezing process is safe and effective and can provide peace of mind to those who may want to start a family in the future, but not quite yet. If and when you decide to start a family you can still try “naturally”, with the reassurance that the frozen eggs are safely stored should you need them.

The Egg Freezing Process
First Appointment
Arrange a first appointment with one of our expert fertility consultants. First appointments are free of charge and available without delay both online and in-person.
Agree a Treatment Plan
Your consultant will help you to understand the egg freezing process in more detail and answer all of your questions. Together with your consultant you will agree a treatment plan and start treatment straight away should you want to do so.
Stimulation and Monitoring
Our nurses will help you to understand how to take “stimulation” medication, which helps your body produce more mature eggs in a single cycle.
Egg Collection
Once the eggs reach the optimal level of maturity our team will help you arrange your egg collection. This non-surgical procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes, and you’re able to return home afterwards.
Egg Freezing
The collected eggs are taken to our laboratory and frozen using a high advanced vitrification technique. Your consultant will discuss with you the number of mature eggs collected, and how that could translate to a successful pregnancy should you decide to use those eggs in the future.
Secure Storage
Your frozen eggs will be securely stored in our state-of-the-art cryopreservation facility where our expert team will monitor all conditions to ensure your eggs remain stable throughout their storage. In Denmark you can store your eggs until you are 46 years of age.

Frequently asked questions about Egg Freezing
How long can my eggs be frozen?
Legislation in Denmark has recently changed to allow for the storage of frozen eggs until the age of 46. This provides even more reassurance to those looking to preserve their fertility.
Will is still have eggs left after egg freezing?
Yes, after egg freezing, you will still have eggs left in your ovaries. The process of egg collection does not leave you with fewer eggs than after a natural cycle, it actually mimics a natural cycle. Egg freezing involves harvesting a portion of your eggs for future use, preserving them at a specific point in time. The number of eggs remaining post-procedure depends on factors like your ovarian reserve, response to stimulation, age, and overall health. Your natural egg supply continues to decline with age, and the quality may diminish, affecting fertility. Egg freezing allows you to preserve a subset of eggs to potentially improve your chances of conception in the future, especially if age-related fertility declines become a concern. However, it doesn’t deplete your entire egg reserve.
Can I still get pregnant if I don't freeze my eggs?
The number and quality of your eggs decrease naturally as you age. By the time you reach your late 30s and 40s, fertility typically declines significantly. However, it’s essential to remember that fertility varies among people, and there are no guarantees.
Without egg freezing, your fertility potential will be subject to the natural ageing process, which may result in a reduced chance of conceiving as you get older.
Is Egg Freezing painful?
Egg freezing generally involves manageable discomfort rather than pain. The process consists of ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, and freezing. During ovarian stimulation, hormone injections can lead to temporary pelvic discomfort, bloating, and mood swings. Egg retrieval is a minor surgical procedure performed under local anaesthesia, causing brief post-procedural discomfort, including mild cramping or pelvic pressure. Recovery typically takes one to two days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Severe side effects, like ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) occur in less than 1% of the cases and can be controlled with a proper management of the process. Talk to our fertility specialists about what to expect during the treatment phases.
Could my frozen eggs be stolen?
At Maigaard, the risk of egg theft is extremely low due to stringent security measures in place. Our accredited facility employs biometric access control, surveillance, intrusion alarms, backup power systems, strict access protocols, and specialised cryogenic storage tanks.
What happens to frozen eggs if I don't end up using them?
If you have frozen eggs that you do not use, we can offer long-term storage, allowing you to continue storing them for a fee payable yearly. You may decide to discard your frozen eggs if you no longer wish to use them. In some cases, frozen eggs may be used for research or scientific studies with your informed consent.
Is egg freezing expensive?
No, at Maigaard we have deliberately kept the price of egg freezing as low as possible to ensure everyone who want’s to preserve their fertility is able to do so.
Are there side effects to the medication I need to take for egg freezing?
Medications used for egg freezing may have side effects. These can include mild abdominal discomfort, bloating, and, rarely (less than 1% of the cases), ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS – this can lead to hospitalisation if not treated and prevented properly). Hormonal changes may lead to mood swings, breast tenderness, and fatigue. Self-administered injections can cause injection site reactions. These side effects vary among individuals, and your fertility specialist will monitor your response to minimise risks. While side effects can be uncomfortable, they are generally manageable, and the potential benefits of egg freezing, preserving fertility options, often outweigh these temporary discomforts. It’s crucial to discuss any concerns with your specialist before starting treatment and it is also very important to signal any unattended effects to our medical and nursing teams
Could my frozen eggs be given to someone else?
No. We maintain stringent protocols to ensure the secure and accurate storage and retrieval of reproductive materials, such as eggs and sperm. Measures include meticulous labelling, specialised cryogenic storage with individual compartments, comprehensive verification steps, and the employment of trained staff following strict procedures.
