In Vitro Fertilization (classic IVF)
IVF-treatment is by far the most effective way of treating infertilityin all cases: obstructed tubes, low sperm quality, hormonal imbalance or unexplained infertility.
In more than 40% of IVF treatments (this value varies according to a woman’s age), a positive pregnancy test can be obtained 14 days after the transfer of an embryo into the uterus.
The treatment involves several steps:
Initial hormonal stimulation to promote the maturation of a good number of follicles inside the ovaries.
The growth of the maturing follicles is monitored through regular ultrasound scans, in order to determine the optimal time to schedule the egg aspiration procedure.
Aspiration of the eggs is performed with local anesthesia by an experienced IVF doctor. This is an ultrasound-guided procedure, where a thin needle is passed through the vaginal wall to the ovaries. The follicular fluid, containing the eggs, is then collected by gentle suction.
The male partner collects a sperm sample by masturbation (this part of the procedure can be done either with frozen or fresh sperm) and, in the laboratory, the obtained spermatozoa are treated in order to separate them from the spermatic fluid.
In the classic IVF procedure, eggs and spermatozoa are subsequently put together in a small dish in the laboratory, with around 100,000 motile per viable egg.
On the next day we will check if fertilization was well succeeded. Embryo development will then be closely monitored at our lab using the Embryocope video time-lapse technology (Maigaard was among the first clinics in the world where this type of technology was developed!). All the details of embryo development are carefully evaluated and recorded and at the end of the process our embryologists will use their experience and the most advanced artificial intelligence algorithms to identify the best embryos.
We will then transfer one or, in less frequent situations, two of the best embryos into the uterus.
14 days later, a pregnancy test can demonstrate if pregnancy has been achieved or not.
